Friends of Europe's Energy Summit

Ben Caldecott, Head of European Policy, will be speaking at this high level European policy summit looking at Europe's uncertain energy future.

His panel will discuss the decarbonising and securing of Europe's energy future. The Arab spring, the Eurozone crisis, Fukushima and rising energy prices have greatly changed the outlook for Europe's transition to a low-carbon energy system. What will be the new trends identified in the International Energy Agency's World Energy Outlook 2011? Will there also be a "Golden Age of Gas" in Europe? The European Commission Roadmap for Europe's energy future that will be published by the end of the year will identify policies and instruments urgently to be put in place if Europe is to achieve a low-carbon energy system by 2050. What vision lies behind this roadmap and what are the limits of an EU-only action?

Other panellists include:

  • Günther Oettinger EU Commissioner for Energy
  • Pierre-Alain Graf Chief Executive Officer, Swissgrid
  • Maciej Kaliski Undersecretary of State, Ministry of Economy, Poland
  • Auke Lont Chief Executive Officer, Statnett
  • Isabelle Muller Secretary General, European Petroleum Industry Association
    (EUROPIA)
  • Nick Robins Head of the Climate Change Centre for Excellence, HSBC

The panel will be co-moderated by Giles Merritt, Secretary General of Friends of Europe, and Willy De Backer, Head of Friends of Europe's Greening Europe Forum.
