Stern words that make global leaders hot and bothered
Following the Stern Review John Howard remains firmly where he has always been: on the defensive, writes Geoff Kitney.
His position is understandable, says James Cameron of UK-based Climate Change Capital. It is natural, he says, that with its huge fossil-fuel based resource industries, Australia would see the gathering momentum of the climate change debate as a threat. "But it is also wrong," he says. "Because of the nature of its economy, Australia has a stronger interest than most in adapting to a new low-carbon age. Failure to do so would be very serious for Australia's future prosperity."
