Environmentally and investor friendly

Jenny Blinch investigates the pioneering pensions funds taking full advantage of global carbon markets.

"The global market for trading carbon emission rights is not yet on the radar of many pension funds, but it probably should be… Always at the vanguard of new investment opportunities, Dutch pension fund giants ABP and PGGM wasted no time in getting involved committing €275m and €250m respectively to market leader Climate Change Capital's second carbon fund.

"Regarding CCC's investments Gareth Hughes, Head of Corporate Development, said, "(we) are reducing emissions, so the end result is we are moving to cleaner and greener environment. So it has a strong environmental wrapper, but it's also good business - it's what I would call 'profits with principles'."
